7: Outlook for the future
(1) From now on, I am in the next stage where I apply the research and findings. In order to entrench washi into Yaeyama as regional industry, first I need to train up my successors who are living on Ishigaki Island. Therefore, I am looking for those who have interest in volunteering to create artwork from Aoganpi-washi and other paper and washi.
(2) Today's washi is becoming out date. I believe that we have to have a new understanding of characteristics of bast fiber including Aoganpi and create a work that fits into our modern life. This does not mean we have to trash our tradition, but we have to recognize inner nature of washi and develop washi.
We need lot of manpower to make washi. I luckily got cooperators, people with intellectual disabilities and school-phobic children who have difficulties in engaging in the society willing to help out. I beleive building workshop for people with disabilities is beneficial for both them as it provides opportunities. As I mentioned before, Ganpi trees are close to extinction in mainland and only a few are making Ganpi-washi. Thus the developement of Ganpi-washi was delayed.
On Yaeyama Island, there are plenty of Aoganpi trees growing naturally. Also I found out that Aoganpi is cultivatable. In order to make Aoganpi local specialty, it is important to recognize the cultural importance of Aoganpi, preserve and cultivate Aoganpi trees, and develope the way Aoganpi should be in modern world. The first Aoganpi-washi exhibition in May 2002 led to establish Association for Preservation of Aoganpi-washi and we now have 41 memebers. The association started training for cultivating of Aoganpi trees and washi making. Also we are making an attempt to produce art work. We are also planing to incorporate the association to NPO.
